.54 caliber. This conversion was made for the State of New Jersey. Rifle is in very fine overall condition; bore is very fine, with strong rifling. Markings are sharp; metal is smooth. Rifle was wrapped in a cloth for many years, and shows a light roughness from the cloth wrapping. Brass is about mint, and retains a beautiful plum finish. Wood is excellent, with some small dings on left side of butt; stock retains both Federal cartouches and one New Jersey cartouche. This is the converison which had the front sight mounted on the socket bayonet rather than the barrel. Manufactured by Whitney and dated 1851. A scarce conversion. $3750
